In East Germany during the late 1970s, Nelly Senff, still grappling with the loss of her boyfriend Wassilij who vanished three years prior, decides to flee with her son Alexej from the confines of the Berlin Wall. She aims to leave behind her painful memories and start anew in the West by feigning marriage to a West German. However, her past soon resurfaces when the Allied Secret Service begins probing into the enigmatic circumstances of Wassilij’s disappearance. Could he still be alive? Was he involved in espionage? As Nelly is consumed by her past and paranoia, she faces a difficult decision: uncover the truth about her former lover or pursue her dreams of a brighter future.
