In the summer of 1994, Emily joins an avant-garde theater production as its youngest participant. She is quickly captivated by the unconventional lifestyles of her fellow performers and feels as though she has discovered a new family. However, as the boundaries between their artistic endeavors and personal connections become indistinct, Emily finds herself ensnared in the intricate power struggles that exist within the group.
