The Illusion
In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi embarked on the legendary expedition of the Thousand from Quarto, fueled by the fervor of young idealists from across Italy. He was accompanied by his steadfast officers, including the notable Palermo Colonel Vincenzo Giordano Orsini. Among the diverse recruits were two Sicilians: Domenico Tricò, a farmer who had moved north, and Rosario Spitale, an illusionist. Upon reaching Marsala in Sicily, the Thousand engaged in battle with the Bourbon forces, whose superior numbers were immediately apparent. Faced with these daunting odds, it seemed nearly impossible for Garibaldi to break through the enemy lines and enter Palermo. However, just as retreat seemed inevitable, Garibaldi crafted a brilliant strategy.
