The Grown Ups
For four decades, Anita, Rita, Ricardo, and Andrés have been part of a school dedicated to children with Down syndrome. However, after so many years, they are growing weary of this secure and predictable setting. Now in their mid-40s, some of them find the work in the school’s bakery lacks the challenge they seek. They also crave more personal freedom. Anita and Andrés are in love but continue to live with their families. They dream of having a peaceful place to call their own, where they can marry and start a family. Unfortunately, the society around them is not prepared to support their quest for greater independence. Despite receiving training to become “responsible adults,” all four remain reliant on others to make decisions for them, which is a source of great frustration.
