Open Heart
Eight children from Rwanda set out on a perilous journey to Sudan, leaving their families in search of critical heart surgery. Their hearts have been severely damaged by a curable illness stemming from childhood strep throat, leaving them with only a few months to live. “Open Heart” explores the interconnected efforts of Dr. Emmanuel, the sole government cardiologist in Rwanda, who is striving to save his young patients, and Dr. Gino, the chief surgeon at the Salam Center, who is battling to keep his hospital operational. This facility is the only source of free, life-saving cardiac surgery in Africa for the millions in need.
