A young Jean-Luc Godard, after contributing to Cahiers du cinéma, determines that producing films is the ultimate form of film criticism. He manages to persuade producer Georges de Beauregard to back a modestly budgeted movie, collaborating with fellow New Wave auteur François Truffaut to craft a story centered around a couple embroiled in gangster life.
