Next to Her

Rachel, a 27-year-old woman, has been solely responsible for caring for her 24-year-old sister Gabby, who has an intellectual disability. When a social worker discovers that Rachel leaves Gabby home alone while she works, she is compelled to enroll her sister in a day-care facility. This marks the first time Rachel shares the responsibility of caring for Gabby with others, disrupting her daily routine and creating a significant void in her life. This absence allows room for a new presence, Zohar, to enter Rachel’s life. His arrival further strains the close-knit bond between the sisters. Rachel clings to Zohar’s affection as if it were a lifeline, yet her struggle to maintain a typical, intimate relationship with anyone other than Gabby leads them into a complex dynamic.
