“Hanna Ranch” is a documentary film that delves into the life of Kirk Hanna, a forward-thinking cattleman dedicated to preserving a traditional lifestyle in Colorado. Raised on his family’s ranch, Hanna emerged as a prominent figure in the environmental ranching movement, aiming to shield the Western landscape from the pressures of development and exploitation. Known as the “eco-cowboy” and featured in “Fast Food Nation,” he was an early proponent of Holistic Resource Management and held leadership roles on various environmental boards, including serving as president of the Colorado Cattleman’s Association. His insights were so valued that many considered him a potential candidate for governor of Colorado. However, his vision of balance and sustainability was challenged by familial disputes and increasing threats to the land, leading to his disillusionment. Despite this, Kirk’s mission endures as his family and friends continue to safeguard the West by preserving Hanna Ranch.
