Exiled from his native country, protest singer Klaus Drittemann is forced to leave East Berlin, along with his wife and child, and relocate to West Berlin. There, representatives from an American record company eagerly await his arrival, intending to capitalize on his defection from communism for both ideological and financial gain. However, Klaus, feeling as out of place in the West as he did in the East, resists being treated as a mere pawn. He leaves the contract unsigned (or signs it in his own way) and heads to Cambridge to reunite with his father, a concert musician who also fled East Berlin thirty years ago when Klaus was just a child. Accompanying him is Emma, a young French journalist who knows the whereabouts of his father, who has been missing for over a decade. Though helpful, Emma may be concealing some truths from him…
