Dr. Lila Colleti, a psychiatrist specializing in the criminally insane at a local prison, is going through a divorce and is heartbroken when her husband is awarded custody of their two young daughters. This decision is largely due to the potentially hazardous nature of Lila’s job, which requires her to work long and unpredictable hours. After one of her patients, Ed Baikman, is released to a halfway house, he becomes delusional and decides to “assist” Lila by killing her ex-husband and his new partner. When Lila rejects his romantic advances, he threatens to accuse her of being an accomplice in the crime. Although Lila’s boyfriend, Detective Macy Kobacek, remains supportive, Baikman’s cunning efforts to frame her are so convincing that even Macy starts to question her innocence.
