Seguridad

In her documentary film “Seguridad,” Newfoundland-based director Tamara Segura, who was once dubbed “Cuba’s youngest soldier” as part of a militia publicity event, delves into her complex relationship with her father against the backdrop of the Cuban Revolution. When Segura receives a scholarship to study filmmaking in Canada, it provides her with much-needed space from her father, who struggles with alcoholism. After spending four years abroad, she returns to Cuba with hopes of reconciliation. However, her father’s unexpected death shortly after her return compels Segura to investigate his troubled history and the impact of Cuba’s heavily militarized regime on his life. Through a series of intimate interviews with her family members, Segura uncovers long-buried secrets that reveal a narrative of resilience and deep familial love. “Seguridad” skillfully integrates a lifetime of photographs into its personal story, offering a rare insight into the private lives of Cubans in the era following the revolution.
