Killing the Indian in the Child

The Indian Act, enacted in Canada in 1876, relegated Indigenous peoples to a status of second-class citizenship, distinct from the white populace. Traditionally nomadic for hundreds of years, these communities were relocated to reservations as a means of regulating their actions and resources. Additionally, countless young Indigenous individuals were taken from their families to undergo Christianization, an act of cultural eradication that continues to have a profound impact on Canadian society today.
